Il poss\u00e8de la   particularit\u00e9 d\u2019avoir publi\u00e9 ses principales cr\u00e9ations dans les plus  grandes fonderies internationales. Sa longue carri\u00e8re, ponctu\u00e9e par de  nombreux travaux de graphisme et de calligraphie\u2028 pour l\u2019\u00e9dition, la  publicit\u00e9 et la communication, l\u2019a amen\u00e9 \u00e0 travailler avec d\u2019importantes  figures telles que Maximilien  Vox et Roger Excoffon. Il enseigna  \u00e9galement \u00e0 l\u2019Atelier national de cr\u00e9ation typographique au sein de  l\u2019Imprimerie nationale.<\/p>\n<p>Cet ouvrage, le premier qui soit d\u00e9di\u00e9 \u00e0 son \u0153uvre, est compos\u00e9 d\u2019une  introduction de Jan  Middendorp  et de plusieurs essais \u00e9crits par  Martin Majoor et S\u00e9bastien  Morlighem, consacr\u00e9s au Pascal, au Photina, \u00e0  l\u2019ITC Mendoza Roman et \u00e0 d\u2019autres cr\u00e9ations moins connues. De nombreux  documents in\u00e9dits sont reproduits pour la premi\u00e8re fois.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:85%\"><span style=\"font-family:times new roman\"><span style=\"font-family:trebuchet ms\">\/\/\/ Extraits &gt;<\/span><\/span><\/span><b><span style=\"font-size:85%\"><span style=\"font-family:times new roman\"><br \/><\/span><\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-size:85%\"><span style=\"font-family:times new roman\"><br \/>L\u2019origine du Pascal remonte directement a\u0300 Guillermo de Mendoza2, le pe\u0300re de Jose\u0301 Mendoza. Celui-ci put appre\u0301cier et apprendre de\u0300s l\u2019a\u0302ge de onze ans aupre\u0300s de son pe\u0300re la beaute\u0301 de l\u2019art du dessin, des lettres et de la typographie. En 1943, alors que son fils avait dix-sept ans, Guillermo de Mendoza re\u0301alisa un ensemble de dessins pour un alphabet de style incise, mais il mourut l\u2019anne\u0301e suivante. Ces dessins furent le point de de\u0301part de la premie\u0300re cre\u0301ation typographique se\u0301rieuse de Mendoza, lorsqu\u2019en 1953, il commenc\u0327a a\u0300 dessiner un alphabet qui s\u2019en inspi- rait directement. Le principe des formes incises demeura, de me\u0302me que le nom, Pascal (hommage au philosophe franc\u0327ais), mais le nouvel alphabet e\u0301tait meilleur a\u0300 bien des e\u0301gards. Les capitales e\u0301taient moins \u00ab fantaisistes \u00bb, mieux structure\u0301es tout en demeurant tre\u0300s e\u0301le\u0301gantes. Mais c\u2019est la cre\u0301ation du bas-de-casse qui re\u0301ve\u0301la tout d\u2019abord le talent de dessinateur de Mendoza.<br \/>La conception d\u2019un caracte\u0300re sans empattements mais contraste\u0301 et avec des formes incises peut e\u0302tre conside\u0301re\u0301e comme une re\u0301action aux line\u0301ales ration- nelles suisses et allemandes alors tre\u0300s re\u0301pandues. Mendoza n\u2019e\u0301tait pas le seul a\u0300 re\u0301agir a\u0300 cette formalisation du dessin. Maximilien Vox, son premier employeur, avait commence\u0301 a\u0300 parler, avec d\u2019autres, du renouveau d\u2019une tradition latine dans la cre\u0301ation typographique \u2013 ce qu\u2019il appelait la \u00ab graphie latine \u00bb, une forme de sensibilite\u0301 qu\u2019il caracte\u0301risait e\u0301vasivement comme \u00ab un certain art d\u2019e\u0302tre, de vivre, de penser \u2013 et d\u2019e\u0301crire \u00bb3. Mendoza avait pleinement et, d\u2019une certaine manie\u0300re, naturellement conscience de cette sensibilite\u0301 latine, en partie peut-e\u0302tre du fait de ses origines espagnoles, et elle se manifeste dans l\u2019ensemble de son \u0153uvre. Les capitales du Pascal s\u2019inspiraient des inscriptions lapidaires romaines tandis que le bas-de-casse se fondait pluto\u0302t sur un romain de type Garamond, mais dans les deux cas, la \u00ab sensibilite\u0301 latine \u00bb e\u0301tait e\u0301vidente.<br \/>Mendoza n\u2019e\u0301tait pas non plus le seul cre\u0301ateur a\u0300 re\u0301fle\u0301chir a\u0300 un caracte\u0300re sans empattements inspire\u0301 des formes humanistes romaines. En Allemagne, Hermann Zapf, de huit ans son ai\u0302ne\u0301, s\u2019e\u0301tait de\u0301ja\u0300 fait un nom avec des caracte\u0300res comme le Palatino (1950) et le Melior (1952). Il emprunta la me\u0302me voie \u00ab latine \u00bb que Mendoza en dessinant l\u2019Optima, publie\u0301 en 1958 par la fonderie Stempel. Zapf fut e\u0301galement influence\u0301 par les capitales sans empattements de certaines inscriptions romaines, voulant me\u0302me nommer sa cre\u0301ation \u00ab Neu-Antiqua \u00bb (\u00ab nouveau romain \u00bb).
